read: Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar

Not that Light On Yoga needs any introduction (after all, it is considered the resource for yoga asanas worldwide), but I thought I’d give it a mention.  This isn’t a super pretty Yoga Journal-esque pictorial with guys and gals in lululemon gear, but a very straightforward manual with photos of an extremely experienced – and flexible – yogini in black short shorts.

This text has photographs and detailed descriptions of tons of asanas and their variations, which is particularly helpful for students who are trying to perfect their technique beyond what they learn in class, and for teachers who want to gain a better technical understanding of asanas for explanatory purposes.  Definitely a must-have reference for anyone interested in serious yoga technique!

book review: a kind diet (alicia silverstone)

When Oprah did a segment on Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone’s book, “The Kind Diet”, I was intrigued (and the book looked pretty!).  I couldn’t find it anywhere – it was sold out immediately in the Bay Area – so I ordered it from Amazon.com a couple of weeks ago.  Here’s the scoop:

The first half of the book talks about meat and dairy, and why they’re bad for you.  If you watched the documentary “Food, Inc”, based on the book by Michael Pollan, you already know a lot of this.  Like a true San Franciscans, I’ve done my fair share of informing myself on the benefits of organic foods, community supported agriculture, and the crazy entities that make up the food industry in the United States…so this half wasn’t really news to me.

The second half of the book is recipes galore – simple, easy to follow, with ingredients that aren’t that hard to find.  I tried making a few things, and really liked that she has some hearty recipes (Kabocha & Black Soybean stew!) as well as lighter fare (veggie sushi rolls).  She also suggests a few products by name, such as Rice Dream Frozen Pies (these are some of my favorite non-dairy treats).

If you’re new to veganism, this is a GREAT book for you.  I’ve been doing the vegan thing for a few months now, and I was beginning to run out of ideas for things to make.  She makes veganism quite accessible, with a lot of fun and interesting information!
